Options open interest tells a different story than price.

Most traders scan candles and funding rates. Fewer map the options OI surface — and that gap is worth something.

Here's what OI clustering actually reveals:

🔹 Large call OI at round strikes above spot = market makers are delta-hedging. Their mechanical spot buying amplifies moves toward those strikes. Price doesn't just "break" resistance — sometimes it's pulled there by dealer hedges.

🔹 Put OI concentrated below spot = institutional downside protection is paid up. It's not bearishness — it's fiduciary hedging. The skew between call and put OI tells you whether the market is greedy-with-a-safety-net or just greedy.

🔹 Expiry clustering (monthly/quarterly) = max pain gravity. Prices often drift toward the strike causing maximum loss to options holders into expiry, then sharply reprice once the options expire.

🔹 Rising OI into macro events = options market pricing a binary outcome. Flat OI into the same events = no edge exists.

The deeper signal: when options OI on $BTC expands during sideways spot action, institutions are loading positions. When $ETH call OI exceeds put OI by a wide ratio at 2-3x current price, that's not speculation — that's upside conviction being priced in premium form.

Options OI doesn't predict direction. It maps the force fields price will move through.
