🧠 Vitalik Buterin Compares Bitcoin Mining vs AI Costs

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted a major difference between the cost structures of Bitcoin mining and AI inference.

According to the breakdown he shared, Bitcoin mining costs are split relatively evenly between computing infrastructure and electricity, with electricity accounting for around 45.9% of total costs.

AI inference, however, is far more dependent on computing infrastructure. Compute capital expenditure represents roughly 76% of AI inference costs, while electricity accounts for only around 4.8%.

This difference helps explain why Bitcoin miners with access to cheap and flexible electricity are increasingly exploring AI and high-performance computing as an alternative revenue stream.

📊 Key figures:
• BTC mining electricity: ~45.9%
• BTC mining compute capex: ~40%
• AI inference compute capex: ~76%
• AI inference electricity: ~4.8%

The comparison highlights how $BTC mining is heavily influenced by energy costs, while AI infrastructure is much more dependent on expensive computing hardware and utilization.
