$ETH: The leverage trap— a smaller futures market, a bigger liquidation hit.
In CoinDesk’s October 15 snapshot, citing CoinGlass:
• ETH: $286M in forced position closures
• BTC: $197M
ETH accounted for about 59% of the combined ETH + BTC total—not 59% of all crypto liquidations. Its outstanding futures positions were roughly $30B versus Bitcoin’s $52B.
Here’s the detail that matters: liquidation figures measure the value of positions closed, not the cash traders personally lost.
When collateral falls below requirements, exchanges can close leveraged positions automatically. That forced selling can add pressure even when a trader’s long-term thesis hasn’t changed.
My takeaway: a price dip and a leverage flush tell different stories. A liquidation spike alone doesn’t prove a bottom.
What would convince you ETH’s selling pressure is easing?
