Australia isn’t banning crypto. It’s connecting the dots. 🇦🇺
On Oct 15, Treasury released draft legislation to bring the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) into Australian law. It’s a consultation draft, not enacted law.
📅 Oct 28, 2026: feedback deadline
📅 Jul 2027: proposed start of domestic reporting
📅 2028: international data exchange
Platforms would report Australian residents’ user and transaction data to the ATO and share it with partner tax authorities.
⚠️ Don’t confuse it with ASIC licensing or AUSTRAC AML rules, which are separate regimes.
My read: for compliant users the change is visibility, not new taxes. Platforms face higher compliance costs; some volume may drift to self-custody/DeFi. Price impact: limited short-term.
Prep: export your trade history, track cost base.
