Crypto Market Performance in September 2026

In September, total crypto market capitalization rose 11.0% to $2.99T, despite a challenging macro and policy backdrop.

August inflation held at 3.4% and payrolls beat expectations. On September 16, the Fed raised rates 25 basis points to 3.75-4.00%, its first hike since July 2023, and 16 of 18 officials expect another by year-end.

The CLARITY Act stalled after a 49-50 cloture vote, though the CFTC and SEC moved crypto rules forward on September 18.

BTC still rallied. Spot ETFs drew $3.49B, turning 2026 flows positive, and Strategy bought 2,615 BTC. This made it the strongest of four straight positive Septembers.

Majors were broadly positive in September, with gains driven by ETF flows, institutional partnerships, and network catalysts.

ZEC led with 65.9%, reaching a market capitalization of roughly $24B as shielded pools neared record levels. LINK rose 26.7% after Circle launched Arc mainnet with Chainlink as its foundational oracle. SOL gained 19.1% as spot SOL ETFs posted their best week since launch and Solana stablecoins hit a record $17.3B. DOGE added 16.2% alongside the broader rally.

BNB rose 12.7%, and BNB Chain became the only chain holding $1B in tokenized stocks. ETH added 10.8% on $689.9M of weekly spot ETF inflows. HYPE was the weakest, up 4.3%, as its August rally cooled despite an all-time high on September 19.

October Watchpoints: Yields, Fed Data, and CLARITY

Rising Treasury yields remain the main risk to the crypto rally. The 10-year yield is at its highest since 2002, pushed up by energy-driven inflation risks, strong growth, and worries about government borrowing.

As of late September, a softer-than-expected August PCE reading had cut the odds of an October Fed hike to about 35-40%, down from around 70% a week earlier, with September payrolls (released October 2) and CPI (due October 14) both key inputs ahead of the Fed’s late-October meeting.

On the regulatory front, CLARITY can still return for another Senate vote, possibly after the November 3 midterms. In the meantime, comments on the SEC’s Regulation Crypto Assets proposal are due October 20.
