Hardware wallets are supposed to be the safe option. This month's Ledger case shows that the device is only as safe as the route it took to reach you. Here is what has been confirmed, what is still estimated, and what owners can do.
đ The news
Ledger said in an October 10 statement that it found an unauthorized hardware implant in one affected user's device, per CryptoSlate. It has not said how many devices were modified, and says it found no sign that its own systems were compromised. Authorized Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis suspended sales pending the investigation.
đ Why it matters
Ledger's Genuine Check confirms the secure chip is authentic. Its documentation says it cannot detect physical modifications if that chip is intact. Tibane Labs found implants that watch signals between the chip and the screen, capture recovery phrases and send them out over cellular modems.
đ The numbers
âą Bitquery estimate: about $93.2M in suspected thefts from 315 wallets across six chains
âą Galaxy Digital estimate: about $91M across 477 addresses
âą Galaxy's split: $64.5M on Tron, where $TRX is the native token, $17.7M on Bitcoin, $8.8M on Ethereum-related networks
âą The two estimates use different methods and address sets
âïž Bull vs bear case
Reassuring side: there is no sign of a breach in Ledger's own infrastructure, and the cases found so far trace back to resellers and marketplaces.
Worrying side: the attack defeats a check many users trusted, and the number of tampered devices is still unknown.
đ What to watch next
âą Whether Ledger publishes a count of affected devices
âą Any update to Genuine Check or packaging security
âą Further tracing by Bitquery and Galaxy
â Practical steps
âą Buy only from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller you can verify
âą If a device may be compromised, move funds to a trusted device with a new recovery phrase
âą Never reuse a recovery phrase that appeared on a suspect device
ââââââââââââ
đĄ My take: Self-custody is still the right choice for many people, but it shifts the security job onto you, including where you buy hardware. A cheap marketplace deal is not worth the risk. This is my view.
đŹ Has this case changed where you would buy your next hardware wallet?
