$XAU Will Gold Hold at $4,000? Speculative Capital Retreats, but Long-Term Buying Remains

Gold is under pressure as the US dollar strengthens and US real yields rise. However, don't be too quick to assume the story is over.

What’s happening:

UBS maintains an optimistic outlook on gold for the medium to long term, projecting that prices could find support around $4,000/oz and rise to $5,400 by September 2027.

UBS strategist Giovanni Staunovo highlights a key distinction: the difference between retreating short-term speculative capital and the still-intact demand for medium-to-long-term allocation.

Two market segments:

Non-commercial traders (speculators) have cut their net-long positions in gold futures and options, adding downward pressure on prices.

Yet, $XAUT ETFs remain resilient, seeing consistent inflows in recent weeks.

In other words: speculators are taking profits and pulling back, but long-term allocation flows have not abandoned the market.

This is a frustrating market environment for short-term traders, but a familiar one for institutional capital. When speculators retreat, prices often correct but if long-term buying remains, the downward momentum tends to be absorbed.

$4,000 is the level to watch. If it holds, the scenario pointing toward $5,400 remains intact. If it breaks, the narrative will need to be rewritten.
