đ IMF: Tokenized Markets Are Growing â But Theyâre Still Small
Tokenization is getting a lot of attention in finance, but the market is still tiny compared with traditional financial markets.
According to the IMFâs latest analysis, public tokenized real-world assets reached around $65 billion by July 2026.
Hereâs where the market stands:
đč $48B â fixed-income assets
đč $2.3B â tokenized equities
đč $65B â total public tokenized real-world assets
The IMF says tokenized markets could bring major advantages:
⥠Faster settlement
đ 24/7 trading
đ° Fractional ownership
đ€ More automated financial processes
But thereâs another side.
Tokenized markets are still fragmented and less liquid than traditional markets. In a sample of tokenized U.S. equity products, the IMF found realized volatility was around 1.5Ă higher than comparable traditional markets.
The IMFâs message isnât that tokenization will fail.
Itâs that the technology is developing faster than the market infrastructure around it.
Better regulation, interoperability, legal clarity and safer settlement systems could determine whether tokenization remains a niche market â or becomes a major part of global finance.
đ $65B may look small today. The bigger question is how large it can become.
