Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of $ETH , has issued a warning that advancements in artificial intelligence may compromise cryptographic security more quickly than quantum computing will.
In a response to a concern raised by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, he advised on October 8 to approach the implications of AI technology cautiously without rushing to move funds.
The primary concern is that the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), which secures the majority of cryptocurrency wallets, could potentially be compromised in a worst-case scenario within months.
The recent release of numerous AI-generated mathematical papers by OpenAI, along with their capability of solving complex equations in a short timeframe, indicates significant progress in mathematical problem-solving.
Furthermore, Buterin noted that even lattice-based cryptographic methods, which are deemed secure against quantum threats, may experience vulnerabilities due to advancements in AI-driven mathematics.
He suggested that the next two years could see a rapid acceleration of mathematical developments. To mitigate risks, Buterin recommended that $ETH transition to hash-only methods.
He advised using hash-based signatures, being cautious with lattice parameters, utilizing new addresses that haven’t publicly revealed keys, and implementing off-chain multisignature confirmations.
While he cautioned against panic, he emphasized the importance of preparation, as poorly executed transitions could result in greater losses than security breaches.
