Vitalik Warns AI Could Weaken Crypto Cryptography
The next major threat to blockchain security may not arrive from quantum computers—it could emerge from faster AI-assisted mathematics.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that the industry should take AI-driven risks to cryptography seriously. He questioned the assumption that elliptic curves may eventually fail while hashes and lattice-based systems remain secure. Buterin said the practical security of lattice cryptography could face “serious hits” over the next two years as AI accelerates mathematical research.
The concern affects multiple technologies, including ECDSA, which is widely used to authorize crypto transactions, as well as lattice-based systems such as ML-DSA and fully homomorphic encryption. Importantly, Buterin did not claim that any of these systems has been broken. The warning is about potential advances, not a confirmed exploit.
Buterin advised against rushing funds into new wallets, saying migration mistakes can create immediate losses. Keeping assets in unused addresses may be a reasonable precaution when it can be done safely, while developers should evaluate larger cryptographic parameters and hash-based alternatives where practical.
My take: This is a long-term infrastructure warning, not a reason for panic selling. The key issue is whether protocol teams can design orderly upgrade paths before a cryptographic breakthrough occurs. Security transitions take years, and rushed upgrades can be more dangerous than an unproven threat.
Are blockchain developers preparing early enough for AI-assisted cryptographic attacks?
