Robinhood Now Owns Bitcoin Itself, Not Just Its Customers' Bitcoin
Robinhood has spent years letting millions of users buy crypto. This week it disclosed that it has put some of its own money in too.
Here's what happened: on October 7, Johann Kerbrat, Robinhood's senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international, said the company has added $25 million of Bitcoin, roughly 294 BTC, to its corporate balance sheet. It's the first time the brokerage has held BTC on its own books, separate from the roughly 185,000 BTC it custodies for customers. Kerbrat framed the purchase as a way to align the company with the crypto community, and he was candid about its size: against a market cap near $100 billion, he said it won't change the company's trajectory much. Reports put it at under 0.5% of Robinhood's cash balance, and nothing suggests a recurring buying program. The move comes as Robinhood widens its crypto footprint, with perpetual futures plans for eligible US customers and its own blockchain infrastructure.
Why does this matter? The dollar amount is small, but the signal is notable: a mainstream consumer-finance platform is now treating Bitcoin as something worth holding, not just something to facilitate. It's also a very different approach from Strategy's, which raises capital specifically to keep accumulating.
Whether this stays a symbolic allocation or grows into something larger is unclear. Does a modest, no-strings position like this say more about conviction, or about caution? đŸ€”
