IMF Grants Waiver for El Salvador’s Bitcoin Breach
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has granted El Salvador a waiver after the country failed to meet a program condition limiting further government-sector Bitcoin accumulation. The waiver allowed the IMF to approve an immediate $138 million disbursement under El Salvador’s $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility.

The IMF said the waiver was supported by corrective measures and renewed commitments from the Salvadoran government. Importantly, the Fund expects no further Bitcoin accumulation beyond documented private donations and is seeking greater transparency over the government’s remaining crypto holdings.

The agreement also reflects a broader reduction in state involvement in Bitcoin. Majority ownership and operational control of the Chivo wallet have been transferred to a private operator, while the IMF expects remaining public-sector exposure to be fully unwound.

The move keeps IMF financing on track but signals that El Salvador’s future Bitcoin strategy will face tighter limits and oversight.
