ALTSEASON: TWO INDICATORS, TWO DIFFERENT STORIES
Everyone wants to know whether Altseason has started. But the answer depends on what you're measuring.
The CMC Altcoin Season Index recently reached 61, a major recovery from 23 just one month earlier.
Still below the official threshold of 75.
Here's the distinction.
CMC measures how many eligible top-100 cryptocurrencies have outperformed $BTC over the previous 90 days. It measures relative performance, not simply whether altcoin prices are rising.
Glassnode's Altcoin Cycle Signal uses a different methodology to assess broader market-cycle conditions. Its reported reading of 81.25 suggests stronger altcoin momentum, but the two scores are not directly comparable.
Then there's Bitcoin dominance.
Around 58–60%, BTC still commands a substantial share of the market. A sustained breakdown could support the rotation narrative, while a reclaim above 60% would challenge it.
But my bigger concern isn't whether an index reaches 75.
It's whether the projects outperforming today can survive into 2027.
Real users, sustainable revenue, token value capture, manageable unlocks and deep liquidity matter more than temporary hype.
An altcoin can outperform Bitcoin for 90 days and still be a terrible long-term investment.
Altseason measures performance. It doesn't measure quality.
