A Single Accounting Line Just Reversed Strategy's Entire Q3 Narrative
Strategy just flipped from a second-quarter loss to one of its biggest quarterly windfalls — and the mechanism behind it reveals just how directly Bitcoin's price now runs through the company's books.
Here's what happened: in an October 5 filing, Strategy estimated a $20.91 billion gain on digital assets for the third quarter, alongside a $4.12 billion income tax benefit. The tax benefit stems from an accounting reversal — back in June, Bitcoin's fair value had fallen below Strategy's cost basis, forcing the company to record a $4.12 billion deferred tax asset offset by a full valuation allowance. By September 30, with Bitcoin's value back above that cost basis, Strategy reversed both the deferred tax asset and its valuation allowance, cutting its estimated deferred tax expense from roughly $6.00 billion down to $1.88 billion. The filing also confirmed Strategy added 334 BTC last week, bringing total holdings to 848,000 BTC. These are preliminary management estimates — KPMG has not yet audited or reviewed the figures — and MSTR shares rose about 2% in premarket trading on the news.
Why does this matter? This is a clean illustration of how tightly Strategy's reported earnings now track Bitcoin's price relative to its own cost basis, with swings of tens of billions of dollars triggered purely by crossing that line in either direction. It's a useful reminder that these are accounting marks, not realized cash, even as they shape headline numbers investors react to.
Does a swing this large on paper change how you'd weigh Strategy's reported earnings against its actual cash position? 🤔
