The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is proposing its first crypto regulations, aimed at creating a clearer federal oversight framework for crypto exchanges.
According to the CFTC, the U.S. has previously managed crypto mainly through post-violation enforcement actions, causing many crypto businesses to leave the country. The CFTC argues that clear regulations from the outset are needed to both protect users and foster innovation.
The new proposal includes Regulation CTX and Regulation CAM, which apply to exchanges registered with the CFTC. These exchanges may allow customers to trade crypto in margin, leveraged, or financed forms, while also having to meet requirements on anti-manipulation, transaction transparency, conflict-of-interest avoidance, and customer asset protection.
