Nikkei reported today that Toshiba plans to double its HDD capacity for AI data centers by FY2027.

I don’t think this changes the HDD supply story much in the near term.

Public data puts Toshiba at a little over 10% of the HDD market by storage capacity, but one Seagate industry contact I spoke with estimates Toshiba’s effective share at closer to 5%.

Either way, Toshiba is still much smaller than Seagate and Western Digital.

More importantly, Seagate is roughly a year ahead of Western Digital in its HAMR capacity ramp. I think that technology and manufacturing lead is the more important moat.

Doubling capacity also does not mean the new supply hits the market immediately. The expansion still needs time for equipment installation, qualification and ramp, so the real impact should be gradual rather than immediate.

For me, this looks more like a signal that HDD demand is strong enough to justify new capacity, rather than evidence that the current supply tightness is about to disappear.
