This represents the first time that Ethereum has carried out one of its most ambitious forks in a live setting.
After Fusaka, Glamsterdam comes next in Vitalik's L1 scaling plan. And it's huge.
What is Glamsterdam?
Amsterdam (Execution) + Gloas (Consensus) = Glamsterdam
3 things that will change ETH forever:
1. ePBS (EIP-7732) — the enshrinement of proposer-builder separation
We'll no longer have to rely on MEV-Boost. Block construction will be carried directly into the protocol, making it more fair and secure, and the protocol will automatically reward the validators.
2. BALs (EIP-7928) — Block-Level Access Lists
Here's the alpha: transactions inform Ethereum of what actions they will carry out → Ethereum is then able to carry them out in parallel.
Outcome: Higher transaction processing speed, quicker synchronization, and less state bloat. The L1 system finally achieves scalability.
3. Smarter Gas Pricing
Gas now takes into account the actual cost of execution and the growth of the state. This is better for the long term.
Timeline:
Sepolia → Oct 6
Hoodi → TBD
Mainnet → Q4 2026 expected
Node operators must make sure that both the EL and CL clients are updated before October 6th!
If Glamsterdam is a success then the $ETH H L1 network will become faster, cheaper, and be ready for the next bull market wave in L1 activity.
