Taiwan just crossed $100 billion in export orders for the first time in history — and it happened in August, not September when everyone expected it.
Ministry of Economic Affairs data shows August orders hit $102.96 billion, up 71.4% year-over-year. January through August totals $704.99 billion, up 55%. The ministry now says a full-year run above $1 trillion is locked, with $1.1 trillion in play. September forecast: $106.0 to $109.1 billion.
The driver is AI infrastructure, high-end compute, and cloud buildout. Stats chief Huang Wei-chieh noted the upside surprise came from IC design — ASIC demand ran hotter than modeled. Info and comms orders doubled, up 100.5%. Electronics hit a monthly record, up 83.9%.
Old-line industrial goods followed the same trajectory. Machinery +28.3%. Metals +26.8%. Chemicals +15.4%. The common thread is chip capex and AI supply-chain demand pulling everything forward.
The US alone booked $42.13 billion, up 88.9%, a monthly record, with info and comms up 195.3%. ASEAN booked $18.35 billion, up 70.5%, led by electronics up 144.5%.
This is what happens when the entire AI supply chain orders six quarters ahead at the same time.
