One detail in Dusk's whitepaper stopped me mid-read.
Their Citadel license contract doesn't just record who holds a license. It tracks whether that license is currently valid, active, or expired — right now, not just at the point it was issued.
That's a different question than "who are you." It's "are you still authorized to do this, right now."
Most identity systems answer the first question once, and stop there.
Dusk's version supports revocation and renewal, so a right granted today isn't assumed to exist tomorrow. That mirrors how licenses actually work off-chain — to trade, to practice, to operate — none of it permanent, all of it reviewable.
Putting that state of authorization on the chain itself, instead of in someone's back office, is what makes this feel closer to real legal infrastructure than a typical crypto feature.
Still, a lifecycle is only as good as whoever manages it. Who decides when a license gets revoked, and how fast does that decision reach the chain?
The contract can track state precisely, but it still inherits every flaw of the process feeding it.
Code enforces a rule instantly. It can't guarantee the humans behind that rule got it right, or that enforcement matches what the rule was meant to do.
That's the bigger lesson, beyond Dusk specifically. Putting a process on-chain makes it transparent and enforceable.
It doesn't automatically make it correct. Worth understanding how a system actually works before trusting it with anything that matters.
