Testnet work begins as Protocol 26 clears the mainnet

@PiCoreTeam began rolling out its Protocol 27 upgrade on testnet this week, moving quickly after completing the Protocol 26 mainnet deployment. The September 15 date marks the team's target for bringing Protocol 27 to the live network, with the core focus being smart contract authentication: giving accounts and applications more advanced ways to authorize transactions on-chain.

Pi Network completed its mandatory Protocol 26 upgrade on August 11, 2026, and has designated Protocol 27 as the "final planned upgrade," signaling the end of the current development sequence. Protocol 26 itself focused on four areas: contract safety, state management, interoperability, and cryptographic capabilities. Protocol 27 builds directly on that foundation.

The final step before full network maturity

The Pi Core Team has described Protocol 27 as the final major protocol upgrade, expected to include expanded smart contract capabilities, DeFi infrastructure, DEX liquidity mechanisms, and foundations for real-world merchant payments. The milestone is expected to incorporate the latest protocol features and improvements, serving as a technical foundation ahead of a potential open mainnet transition, though its timeline depends on the successful deployment and stabilization of prior upgrades.

Protocol 27 is the final planned upgrade in Pi Network's current development cycle, following eight protocol upgrades completed since February, starting from version 19.6. The recent introduction of tools like SoloHost, Pi Sign-in, and PiVerify at Pi2Day 2026 suggests the Core Team is pushing Pi toward compute, identity, and authentication use cases that could generate real on-chain demand.

For node operators, no immediate action is required until the Pi Core Team issues a formal Protocol 27 deadline. The timing and specific requirements for Protocol 27 will be communicated separately, and operators who completed Protocol 26 should monitor official Pi Network channels for the announcement.
