I keep coming back to a small assumption most people in DeFi never question: that a floating rate is just the natural state of things. You deposit, you borrow, and the number attached to your position drifts with the market, and everyone treats that drift as the cost of participating on-chain at all. TermMax is one of the few protocols that seems to disagree with that quietly, without making a big show of it.
The easiest way I've found to think about it is a fixed-rate mortgage versus an adjustable one. Nobody in traditional finance thinks it's strange to lock in a rate for a set term and know exactly what you'll owe. It's DeFi, oddly, that normalized the opposite — variable rates that can move against you overnight, loans that get more expensive the moment you're least prepared for it. TermMax borrows that older, more boring idea and rebuilds it on top of a Uniswap V3-style AMM, which is a strange but sort of elegant combination once you sit with it.
At the base layer, the mechanism is the part worth slowing down on. TermMax splits a loan into pieces — a Fixed-rate Token that behaves like a zero-coupon bond, sold at a discount and redeemed at face value when the term ends, and a Gearing Token that wraps the collateral and debt position itself. It's a bit like turning a loan into two tradeable instruments instead of one static position you just have to sit and watch. Lenders get a number they can actually plan around. Borrowers get a cost that doesn't move under them mid-term. Neither side is guessing.
Above that sits the market layer, where makers can set their own pricing curves and range orders, so rates aren't dictated by a single algorithm the way they are on most lending AMMs. And above that, there's a curator layer — vaults where depositors hand capital to managers who run strategies across TermMax's isolated markets. This is the part that feels most like an admission that most users don't want to manage a loan book themselves.#termmax @TermMax
