Stripe just acquired @OpenRouter for $7B. Beyond the obvious (founder Alex Atallah = ex-OpenSea), here's the real alpha:

1. Founder literally manifested this
Atallah kept calling OpenRouter the "Stripe of AI" for 2 years straight. Guess who showed up with a checkbook? The actual Stripe. Self-fulfilling prophecy speedrun.

2. Stripe already owned the data
OpenRouter ran on Stripe infrastructure from day one - billing, taxes, fraud detection, global payments. Stripe had full visibility into:
- Every cash flow
- Which models printed money
- Developer usage patterns
This wasn't an acquisition. This was Stripe buying the front door to a house they already owned the plumbing for.

3. Selling shovels > mining gold
While OpenAI and Anthropic burn billions on GPU costs for razor-thin margins, Stripe said "nah" and bought the toll booth instead.

OpenRouter takes 5.5% on every API call. Stripe takes 3% on every payment. Same playbook, different era.

$7B to control the choke point where AI tokens flow = classic infrastructure play. As long as money moves through AI, Stripe collects rent. Forever.
