heres the question that actually made me stop scrolling through Babylon's docs. what happens the day every challenger assigned to watch the network goes completely dark. does fraud just slip through, uncontested, because nobody was looking.
no. and the reason why is the entire point of this design. Universal Challengers exist to catch invalid state transitions before they settle, but nobody handed them exclusive keys to that job. its not a permissioned club with a fixed roster. its a role, open to whoever wants to fill it. if the assigned watchers are asleep, offline, bribed, compromised, whatever, anyone else paying attention to the chain can submit the exact same challenge. that includes the depositor whose BTC is sitting in the vault getting threatened.
sit with that for a second, because its a real design choice, not a footnote. most systems that rely on a dedicated "watcher" role are quietly betting that the watcher shows up when it matters. miss that window once, even by accident, and the fraud goes through clean, no second chance, no appeal. babylon refuses to make that bet. it makes the role open instead of assigned, so absence stops being a vulnerability and just becomes irrelevant to whether fraud gets caught.
but heres where i stop nodding along and start pushing back a little. permissionless is not the same thing as active. anyone can challenge doesnt mean everyone is watching in real time, every second, for every vault, across every application built on this. a depositor has skin in the game and an obvious reason to check constantly. some random observer with zero stake in that specific vault has no reason to bother.
so who is actually doing this job on a normal, boring, nothing-happening day. is fraud getting caught because the system is genuinely open to anyone, or because depositors are quietly forced to babysit their own positions.
