I used to think splitting BTC into multiple vaults was mainly about better organisation. But in Babylon’s TBV design, it changes something much more important: how liquidation can actually happen.
A Bitcoin vault is a single UTXO. Unlike an Ethereum collateral balance, the protocol cannot simply take 30% of it and leave the rest untouched. The entire vault has to move.
That creates a strange trade-off. One large vault can make liquidation feel like a cliff: if it is seized, the whole UTXO is involved. Multiple vaults create more flexibility because the protocol can seize the minimum number of whole vaults needed to restore the position’s health factor.
So the structure of your BTC position becomes part of the risk management itself.
The interesting question is whether this is a limitation of Bitcoin being adapted to DeFi, or a new design primitive that DeFi protocols should learn to work with.
