Here are the key takeaways from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks at the Economic Club of Chicago Wednesday:

In his prepared opening remarks, Powell again stressed the central bank’s focus on preventing potential tariff-driven price hikes from triggering a more persistent rise in inflation.

“Our obligation is to keep longer-term inflation expectations well-anchored and to make certain that a one-time increase in the price level does not become an ongoing inflation problem,” Powell said.

The Fed chair said policymakers would balance their dual responsibilities of fostering maximum employment and stable prices.

In the Q&A session, Powell said the Fed will continue to do what it does irrespective of politics: “Our independence is a matter of law.”

Powell sought to soothe concerns by describing markets as functional and orderly; as he spoke, stocks continued to sell off and bonds jumped. The S&P 500 was 2.2% lower and the Nasdaq was 3.2% lower.
