Breaking News: SBP Bans Marked Currency Notes from July 1, 2025
Karachi – May 16, 2025: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced a major policy shift to curb the circulation of defaced currency. Starting July 1, 2025, the beginning of the new fiscal year, any currency notes bearing pen marks, stamps, or written text will be deemed invalid and will not be accepted in transactions or deposits.
This step is part of the SBP’s broader initiative to promote clean note policy, ensure currency hygiene, and reduce the counterfeiting risk.
The SBP has urged the public to carefully inspect currency notes before accepting them and to avoid writing anything on banknotes. Commercial banks have also been directed to educate customers and return any defaced notes presented over the counter.
