Bob repays his loan. Larry still doesn't have to let him have his Bitcoin back.
That's the flaw sitting inside Discreet Log Contract lending setups like Lendasat, and it's the same flaw that's haunted Lightning's HTLCs for years. Here's the setup: Bob borrows against his Bitcoin, and getting it back depends on Larry revealing a repayment secret once Bob pays him. Simple enough, until you notice nothing forces Larry to reveal it. He can just sit on it. Bob did everything right — sent the payment, held up his end — and his coins stay locked anyway, because the contract's release condition depends on Larry's cooperation, not just Bob's compliance.
The obvious fix doesn't work either. You might think: just penalize Larry for withholding the secret. But how do you prove, on-chain, that Larry has the secret and is choosing not to share it, versus some other failure happening? The withholding is invisible from outside the contract. There's no transaction that says "Larry is being difficult right now." This is what people mean by the free-option problem — Larry gets the option to cooperate or not, and Bob bears all the downside either way, with no on-chain event to point to as proof of bad faith.
So the secret-reveal step itself is the weak point, not the collateral, not the loan terms. Any lending design built on someone voluntarily disclosing information at the right moment inherits this same gap. Fix the disclosure mechanism, or the same story plays out with different names.
