The final push for the CLARITY Act has now reached a major turning point.
Despite last-minute efforts and changes around ethics provisions, the U.S. Senate failed to advance the bill in its September 15 procedural vote. The measure received 49 votes in favor and 50 against, falling short of the 60 votes required to move forward.
The bill was designed to establish a clearer federal framework for digital assets and define the roles of the SEC and CFTC.
The market reacted sharply to the setback, with Bitcoin and several crypto-related stocks moving lower after the vote.
However, the story may not be completely over. SEC and CFTC officials have indicated that they can continue working on crypto rules using their existing authority, while some lawmakers have suggested the legislation could potentially be reconsidered.
For crypto traders, this means regulatory uncertainty remains an important market factor.
