Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in the Maldives for a two-day State Visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
Anwar arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Monday and was received by Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The visit is taking place at President Muizzu’s invitation and runs from September 14–15, 2026.

🤝 HIGH-LEVEL TALKS AHEAD
President Muizzu and Prime Minister Anwar are scheduled to hold official bilateral talks focusing on strengthening cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia, expanding collaboration in international forums, and identifying new areas of partnership.
The two leaders are also expected to witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering selected areas of bilateral cooperation.
Senior Maldivian officials, including Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, are scheduled to pay separate courtesy calls on the Malaysian Prime Minister.
🌏 WHY THIS VISIT MATTERS
The visit comes as Maldives and Malaysia mark 58 years of diplomatic relations.
Officials and analysts expect the visit to create opportunities for deeper cooperation in areas including:
💰 Trade and investment
🎓 Education
🏝️ Tourism
🛡️ Defence and security
☪️ Islamic affairs
🌐 Regional and international cooperation
Malaysian officials have highlighted the potential to expand existing cooperation while exploring new opportunities that could benefit both countries.
The invitation for Anwar’s visit was extended during President Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia in April 2025, making this Anwar’s first visit to the Maldives since becoming Malaysia’s Prime Minister in November 2022.
📈 REGIONAL SIGNIFICANCE
Beyond bilateral relations, the visit comes at a time when countries across the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia are seeking stronger economic, diplomatic and strategic partnerships.
For the Maldives, closer cooperation with Malaysia could create additional opportunities in tourism, education, investment, trade and human-capital development.
For Malaysia, stronger engagement with the Maldives provides another avenue to deepen its presence and partnerships across the Indian Ocean and South Asian region.
👤 WHO IS ANWAR IBRAHIM?
Anwar Ibrahim, born on August 10, 1947, became Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister on November 24, 2022.
Before becoming Prime Minister, he served in several senior government positions, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. He is also the president of Malaysia’s People’s Justice Party (PKR).
Anwar’s political career has included periods of imprisonment, opposition leadership and a lengthy campaign for political reform before eventually becoming Prime Minister in 2022.
🔥 THE BIGGER PICTURE
Anwar’s Maldives visit is more than a diplomatic ceremony.
It represents an opportunity for Malaysia and the Maldives to deepen economic, political and people-to-people ties while exploring new areas of cooperation in a rapidly changing regional environment.
The key question now: What new agreements and partnerships will emerge from the Muizzu–Anwar talks?
