U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said he had no regrets about starting the Iran war despite its potential impact on the Republican party heading into the midterm elections.

Speaking to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, Trump said he did not “believe in the word ‘regret,’ and that if had to do it again, “I would do exactly as I did.”

Trump also dismissed suggestions that some of his supporters were unhappy over the war, and reiterated his earlier claims it will end right after the midterm elections in November.

Trump and the Republican party are grappling with growing voter ire over the Iran war, especially due to its effect on energy prices and broader living costs.

The conflict showed few signs of easing, with the U.S. and Iran engaging in some of their worst attacks on shipping this week.

Washington has largely maintained its claims that Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon, and has repeatedly demanded Tehran taper its nuclear program as part of any peace deal with Washington.
