Bitcoin Asia 2026 Live News Desk with Anndy Lian: Bitcoin, Governments and Web4
At the Bitcoin Asia 2026 conference in Hong Kong, the live news desk hosted a compelling discussion on the global trajectory of cryptocurrency. Host Grace Remington and Bitcoin Magazine producer Spencer Nichols sat down with Anndy Lian, author and former Chief Digital Adviser to the Mongolian government, to unpack the shifting landscape of Bitcoin adoption across the Asian continent. The conversation kicked off in the wake of a mainstage address by Changpeng Zhao (CZ), who envisioned a “Bitcoin century” where nations compete for capital, energy, and geopolitical positioning in a digital economy. When asked if this is merely a Western tech narrative, Lian was definitive: it is already a global reality. He pointed to Japan’s Metaplanet and the surge of Bitcoin-related funds in Hong Kong as evidence that governments are actively listening. “Bitcoin as an institutional credit, or Bitcoin as one of the core reserve assets… that is already happening,” Lian noted, emphasizing that this macroeconomic shift is no longer just a “US thing.” Lian provided a nuanced breakdown of regional adoption, particularly contrasting Hong Kong with mainland China. While China has strictly banned cryptocurrency mining and trading, Hong Kong has positioned itself as a pro-institutional hotspot, actively welcoming digital asset firms to ensure they are in a comfortable regulatory position, effectively making it the premier gateway for digital assets in the region. Consequently, the bulk of Greater China’s crypto activity has naturally migrated to the city. Looking at the broader Asian landscape, Lian distinguished Hong Kong’s institutional focus from Singapore’s more conservative approach. Singapore, he noted, is heavily focused on payment utilities, stablecoins, and tokenized deposits. When asked to identify the next major pioneer in Asia, Lian highlighted South Korea. He argued that South Korea’s robust innovation ecosystem and its current dominance as a heatmap for AI and semiconductor manufacturing position it perfectly to lead the next wave of crypto integration. Before wrapping up, the discussion turned to Lian’s latest literary project, his new book Web4: The Age of Autonomous Intelligence. Lian explained that Web4 represents the critical convergence of AI-driven blockchain technology. He envisions this new era driving all transactions on-chain, thereby accelerating the broader digital economy and creating a more autonomous financial ecosystem, fundamentally changing how global commerce operates. As the interview concluded, the overarching message was clear: the center of gravity for Bitcoin innovation and institutional adoption is firmly taking root in Asia. With hubs like Hong Kong leading the institutional charge and nations like South Korea pushing the technological frontier, the “Bitcoin century” is no longer a distant prediction, but an unfolding reality.
