VP JD Vance delivered a personal tribute to his late grandfather at the Ohio steel plant where the man worked as a welder for 40 years.

"Papaw was a welder in this place for 40 years. And today, his grandson stands here as the Vice President of these United States," Vance said.

Vance described his grandfather as uneducated but brilliant, a complicated man of faith who never attended church, and a former alcoholic who quit cold turkey when he became a grandfather.

His grandfather's American dream: well-fed kids, a car engine to tinker with, lukewarm coffee, and a doughnut from Central Pastry or Milton's Donuts.

Vance said his grandfather believed too many politicians were corrupt and wanted three things from leaders: reasonable taxes, safe communities, good jobs for those willing to work, and an end to America playing "policeman of the world."
