According to the BBC, the US government revoked the green cards of an Iranian woman, her husband and their teenage son after citing the husband's family ties to a prominent figure linked to the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Maryam Tahmasebi, a psychology and statistics professor in Los Angeles, said she and her family were detained by immigration agents in April and accused the government of punishing them for their bloodline. Tahmasebi and her son are being held at a detention center in Dilley, Texas, while her husband, Seyed Eissa Hashemi, is at a separate facility in Pearsall, Texas.
The State Department said it had revoked the family's status, while spokesman Tommy Pigott said the government can terminate the legal status of foreign nationals who pose a threat to US national security. Tahmasebi's lawyer, Maria Kari, said the family has not been charged under any national security provision and that no US agency has presented evidence to support the allegations. A federal judge has temporarily blocked their deportation after lawyers challenged the detention and sought their release.
