Transactions are not written to a blockchain individually. They wait, get grouped into a block, and the block is added to the chain as one unit.
This is why transfers do not settle the instant you press send, and why they tend to settle in clusters rather than smoothly. It also explains why a busy network feels slow: a block has a size limit, so when more transactions are waiting than fit, some wait for the next one. Nothing is broken when that happens. You are in a queue, and the queue is the design.
