Many are wondering who built the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange: who is Changpeng Zhao?

Zhao, 46, is not very well known given that less than a year ago he was still a middle-class Chinese.

Born in Jiangsu, China, Zhao immigrated to Canada with his family when he was young. After studying computer science at Montreal's McGill University, he worked at the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Bloomberg.

The coding master reached the position of chief technical manager of Bloomberg before he was 30 years old.

In 2005 he left and moved to Shanghai to found Fusion Systems, a company that offers high-frequency trading systems for brokers. However, the initiative failed with the Chinese government's regulatory crackdown on high-frequency trading.

In 2013, he joined Blockchain.info for eight months. Here he worked as a member of the cryptocurrency wallet team. He then served less than a year as chief technology officer at OKCoin.

In July 2017, he decided to set up his own cryptocurrency exchange, Binance. The exchange quickly outstripped other competitors and became the largest cryptocurrency exchange in China.

As of 2023, it is the stock market with the highest turnover
