🌍 The World’s Deepest Hole — Humanity’s Boldest Failure

In the northern Murmansk region, beneath a rusty metal cap, lies a well 12,262 meters deep—the Kola Superdeep Borehole, humanity’s deepest venture into Earth’s crust.

Started in 1970, drilling aimed to reach the mantle. But as they went deeper:

7 km: Found water where none should exist 💧

9 km: Fossilized microorganisms 2 billion years old 🦠

12 km: Temperatures hit 230°C 🔥, rocks turned plastic, drill strings broke

After 20 years, the project was shelved. The mantle was still 15–20 km away, and the limits of technology were reached.

The borehole now lies welded shut, abandoned equipment scattered, crumbling buildings around it—a silent monument to our curiosity… and our limits.

If the Earth were an apple, the drill couldn’t even pierce the skin. 🍏
