The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is widely expected to hike interest rates by 25 basis points to a new target range of 3.75%–4.00%. The decision will be officially announced at the conclusion of the Fed's two-day meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. ET.

If implemented, this will mark the first rate hike since July 2023, breaking a prolonged holding pattern at 3.50%–3.75% that has been maintained since December 2025.

Why the Fed is Moving Toward a Hike

Monetary policy expectations shifted dramatically following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish address at the Jackson Hole symposium in late August, where he stressed that "price stability is not self-executing". A subsequent flurry of strong economic indicators has cemented the case for tightening:

Stubborn Inflation: While core CPI hovered around 2.4% in August, the Fed’s preferred gauge—core PCE—remained elevated at 3.3% as of July. Energy prices and supply chain pressures have kept broader price risks alive.

Resilient Labor Market: August nonfarm payrolls rebounded with 162,000 jobs added, keeping the unemployment rate steady at 4.1% and proving the economy can handle higher borrowing costs.

Institutional & Market Forecasts

Market participants have rapidly re-priced their expectations over the past week:

CME Group FedWatch Tool: As of September 14, futures traders are pricing in a 93% probability of a 25-basis-point hike.

Wall Street Consensus: A Reuters poll revealed that an 85% majority of surveyed economists (86 out of 101) project a quarter-point hike. Major institutions like Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, and UBS have all flipped their base cases to expect a rate increase....
