Last week I saw Dusk and my first reaction was, “Darn, another privacy coin that wants to help people evade regulation.” Same playbook as Monero—I was ready to swipe it aside. But the more I dug, the more it didn’t add up, and I realized I had it backwards.

Here’s an analogy: Monero is like a car with the entire body covered in black film—nobody can see inside, and even the police can’t do anything when investigating. That’s its selling point, and also why exchanges delist it. Dusk isn’t that kind of approach. It’s more like a car with tinted film but with a special key. Ordinary people can’t see in, but regulators who have the key can open it for checks. The key point is that you don’t need to dismantle the car first. It uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify that “this transaction is compliant” while, at the same time, never revealing what “this transaction actually is.”

At first I thought these requirements were in conflict—fish and bear’s paw, you can’t have both. Then it clicked: what institutions want was never “totally invisible.” It’s more like, “Don’t let competitors see my holdings and strategies, but when regulators want to investigate, I can prove I’m clean.” Think about it: if every trade detail from an asset management company is laid bare on-chain, competitors can reverse-engineer its strategy in minutes. That’s more lethal than a hacker attack. That’s the audience Dusk is targeting—not retail users trying to pump an “air coin,” but institutions stuck in the knot of “must be compliant, and must also be confidential.”

I think this positioning issue matters far more than most people realize, because it determines which market it’s actually competing for.
