Bitfinex, a leading crypto trading platform, announced that it managed to recover some of the funds lost in a hacking incident that occurred in 2016. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has returned $312,219.71 in cash and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), to Bitfinex in sustainable recovery efforts.

In August 2016, Bitfinex experienced a significant security attack that resulted in the theft of 119,756  bitcoins, valued at $72 million at the time. However, in 2022, the United States government managed to return some of the stolen bitcoins, valued at $3.6 billion at that time. This led to the arrest of Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather R. Morgan, on suspicion of money laundering related to the hack.

In an effort to address the Bitfinex hacking incident and arrest the perpetrators, US Customs and Border Protection has carried out asset seizures in collaboration with the crypto trading platform. The agency, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is committed to helping uncover the incident and providing support in recovering lost funds.

“This particular seizure demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement officials to diligently trace all proceeds of crimes committed against Bitfinex nearly seven years ago. "We hope to recover as much of the stolen bitcoin as possible and redistribute it to holders of tokens issued in response to the hack in 2016," Bitfinex CTO Paolo Ardoino said in a press release.

PRC Token For Compensation

In response to a security incident that occurred five years ago, Bitfinex introduced Recovery Rights Tokens (RRT) as a form of compensation for affected users. Recently reclaimed funds will be used to redeem these tokens, giving their owners the opportunity to obtain restitution for the losses they have incurred.

Although the amount of funds raised is currently insufficient to redeem all 30 million RRTs in circulation, the Bitfinex contract stipulates that each token holder must be redeemed at a price of $1. Therefore, approximately 80% of the recovered assets will be distributed to UNUS SED LEO token holders as part of the implemented restitution policy.

Bitfinex will begin the process of converting RRT tokens with distribution which will be carried out proportionally according to the amount of RRT owned by each holder. This exchange is scheduled to take place on July 6, 2023, at exactly 12:00.01 UTC.

Taking a Look at the Bitfinex Hacking and Laundering Scheme

After the hacking incident occurred, the perpetrators carried out a series of transactions designed to hide the origin and movement of the funds they stole. Some experts believe they used a method known as “chain hopping,” in which they transferred stolen cryptocurrency between different trading platforms that had more lax customer verification (KYC) procedures.

However, the attempt ultimately failed, and United States legal authorities managed to locate and confiscate the stolen funds in one of the largest cryptocurrency seizures in history. This success not only demonstrates the resolve and prowess of law enforcement agencies, but also emphasizes the importance of implementing robust security measures and strict KYC protocols across all cryptocurrency exchange platforms to prevent and counter future attacks.
