* Dell launches a new global loyalty program with exclusive Web3 decentralized storage service provided by Oort
NEW YORK , July 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Dell Technologies has partnered with Oort , a web3 data cloud services provider, to launch a new global loyalty program with decentralized data storage. The program will be available to Canadian customers on July 7, 2023, to U.S. users on July 26, 2023, and then to over 10 million customers from the rest of the world.
Oort provides Dell customers with decentralized storage services (DSS) including data storage and data migration, bridging the gap between web2 and web3 in terms of data services, allowing users to securely store, migrate and retrieve data anytime, anywhere. In addition, it helps save up to 60% of costs compared to the most popular solutions currently available.
New decentralized storage services are more accessible to web2 users. They don’t need to understand the complexity of web3, just enjoy privacy, security, and cost efficiency.
“We chose to partner with Dell because of their global reach, reliable reputation, and commitment to innovation. By integrating our web3 Data Cloud service into their loyalty program, we are able to provide a seamless and secure customer experience backed by trust in Dell’s technology and expertise,” said Dr. Max Lee, Founder and CEO of Oort. “Our web3 Data Cloud offers a unique and innovative approach to Dell’s loyalty program by leveraging cutting-edge decentralized technology to provide enhanced privacy, reliability, and cost-efficiency. Additionally, it allows for seamless integration with other web3 applications and services, providing users with full control over their data anytime, anywhere.”
For web3 data cloud services, Oort uses a decentralized three-tier node architecture to achieve enterprise-level performance:
Supernodes that support computing and database capabilities provided by Oort partners, public and private cloud servers.
The edge nodes support storage, data transfer functions and improve the scalability, speed and overall performance provided by Oort's edge device "Deimos".
Backup nodes serve as data backup and archiving provided by current decentralized storage networks such as IPFS.
Dell has launched its latest customer loyalty program, Dell Rewards, designed to drive strong engagement and deliver exceptional value to its vast network of more than 10 million global loyalty program members. This innovative program focuses on improving members' lifestyles and businesses by inspiring their passions and pursuits, with a range of features, cutting-edge services and member-only benefits designed to meet the unique needs of Dell's valued customer base.
The loyalty program consists of carefully selected Dell and partner platforms, each of which offers member-only benefits tailored for Dell loyal customers, aiming to redefine customer satisfaction. Among these platforms, the inclusion of Oort DSS, the only Web3 service in the program, reflects Dell's commitment to continuously introduce pioneering products to its valued customers.
Dell Rewards is dedicated to building stronger connections with its loyal customers, providing exceptional support and ushering in a new era of unparalleled service and innovation.
*Computer market-Dell's total shipments in 2022 reached 49.7 million units
Dell has undergone many transformations since its founding in 1984. The transformation from Dell to Dell Technologies was due to Dell Inc's acquisition of EMC in 2016. The new company after the merger was named Dell Technologies, which is also the Dell Technologies Group we see now, which brings together Dell, Dell EMC, VMware, etc., covering end-to-end overall solutions for consumption, enterprise, strategy, structure, and security, spanning all aspects from edge to core to cloud.
Before its transformation, Dell Technologies was confident in its unique Dell direct sales business model and missed the opportunity to transform into end-to-end consulting services represented by IBM. At the same time, on the road of digital product entertainment represented by Apple's iPod, iPhone, and iPad, it launched its own digital music player Dell DJ, 5.0-inch tablet Streak, and Android-based mobile phone Aero, but ultimately failed.
Lenovo ranked first in the PC market in the fourth quarter of 2022, with shipments totaling 15.5 million units. The company was also the largest manufacturer in terms of shipments for the entire year of 2022, with a total of 68.1 million computers sold.
HP ranked second, with 13.2 million units shipped in the fourth quarter and 55.2 million units for the full year 2022.
Dell ranked third with sales of 10.8 million units in the fourth quarter. Its strength in the commercial sector boosted shipments in early 2022, bringing Dell's total shipments for the year to 49.7 million units.
Apple ranked fourth in both the fourth quarter and full-year rankings, with 27.2 million computers shipped, a 6% drop, as of 2022. Asus' shipments fell 4% compared to 2021, rounding out the top five.
*When did OORT get involved with Dell?
It can be seen from OORT’s official Twitter that on March 11, 2022, it was officially announced that Mitch Kennedy, head of Dell’s global loyalty marketing strategy, joined the OORT Advisory Board.
At the same time, OORT and Dell have been launching the Dell-OORT education program since then to help Dell's tens of millions of users transition to Web3. It is reported that Dell has a special fund of 400 million US dollars for this program, which shows Dell Computer's determination to differentiate itself in competition.
* Dell's transformation to differentiated competition
Dell, which shipped 49.7 million computers, pre-installed Oort decentralized storage service, will open up the road to differentiated competition in the computer market with Web3
If you study Dell's growth history, you will find that it is a company that keeps pace with the times and continues to evolve. In the 34 years of development, the company name has changed from the early "Dell Computer" and "Dell" to the current "Dell Technologies Group", which has undergone many major transformations.
In 1984, 19-year-old Michael Dell founded Dell Computer in a dormitory at the University of Texas. He relied on a "disruptive" direct sales model to defeat IBM, AST, Compaq and other companies. Since 2001, Dell has been the world's leading PC company for many years. In 2003, Dell removed the word "Computer" from its corporate name and began its diversified expansion.
At first, Dell relied on its standardized route and unique supply chain advantages to enter the fields of servers, storage, printers, etc. Every time Dell entered a new field, it would make its competitors feel "terrified". Dell's rapid rise and aggressive growth momentum are called the "Dell effect".
However, times are changing, and the market is changing. The direct sales model that once created glory for Dell has not been well adapted to some emerging markets and has also been impacted by the emerging e-commerce. In the fourth quarter of 2006, Dell lost its position as the world's largest PC manufacturer.
Moreover, with the trend of IT service, the profit margins of standardized hardware products are becoming increasingly thin and can no longer meet the requirements for profit growth.
* Dell's transformation path centered on investment, mergers and acquisitions, and cooperation
In early 2007, Michael Dell, who had stepped down as Dell CEO for three years, returned to his post at the request of the board of directors. After his return, Michael Dell broke the single direct sales model and revitalized the PC business. At the same time, he also placed Dell's future on enterprise services and acquired many enterprise software and service companies.
In May 2016, Dell integrated EMC and renamed it "Dell Technologies". Dell Technologies consists of seven members: Dell, Dell EMC, VMware, Virtustream, RSA, Pivotal and Secureworks, covering edge computing, data center and cloud fields, and can build a one-stop "end-to-end" full-stack solution for users.
This is also the "big and complete" one-stop business model that distinguishes Dell from other companies. Dell's old rival HP had previously adopted this model, but it did not stick to it due to disputes in the board of directors over business splits.
Once the market dies, the company will become a zombie no matter how big it is. Therefore, Dell began to transform its strategy. Looking back at the development of the IT industry over the years, Dell found that the dominant factor of the industry has shifted from hardware upgrades to information and data. This is mainly reflected in:
1. More and more people and social resources are connected to the Internet, and a large amount of data is being generated.
2. The processing of massive data is inseparable from servers and IDCs (Internet Data Centers), and the demand for storage hardware has grown massively.
3. Enterprises have a need to process data, but the cost of purchasing hardware is high, so enterprises begin to seek cloud storage and computing solutions.
The whole society has entered an ecological cycle where individuals generate data and enterprises use data. Today, enterprises process more data in a year than in the past decade. Of the total value of the global IT industry of 3 trillion US dollars, 0.25 trillion US dollars is the consumer market such as PCs, and the other 2.75 trillion US dollars is the government and enterprise market. The enterprise information market is 10 times the PC market!!! This made Dell, who was busy with the assembly business, suddenly realize.
However, knowing that big data, cloud platforms, and cloud computing are the future direction, what should Dell do? Dell has been engaged in hardware assembly for many years, and its core competitiveness lies in supply chain management. Suddenly switching tracks is tantamount to revolution. So Dell chose a gentle way, taking what is available (cooperation) or buying, buying, buying! It began its transformation.
Previously, Dell Summit exhibited nearly 100 solutions, covering key technology products such as modern data center, storage, hyper-convergence, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, AR/VR, etc. The theme of each forum speech at the summit did not leave "digital transformation". Facing the advent of the digital age, Dell wants to become a leader in enterprise digital transformation: through multi-cloud strategy, multi-layer strategy and software-defined approach, flexibly transform IT architecture; invest in Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, VR/AR technology to meet the needs of IT system innovation; and continue to deepen the construction of the four major ecosystems of hybrid cloud, intelligent manufacturing, artificial intelligence and VR/AR to help enterprises with digital transformation.
Judging from Dell’s transformation process above, from the PC era, the IT service era, to the digital era that has already arrived, Dell has been moving forward in line with the development trend of the IT industry.
