Original article: "SUI Network Incentive Test Network is officially launched, four details worth paying attention to"

Author: Sui World DAO

Sui Network, a Layer1 public chain developed by Mysten Labs, announced the launch of Sui Testnet Wave 1, which focuses on independent validators. This means that since the launch of Sui Devnet on May 6, 2022, SUI has taken a step further towards a decentralized mainnet. What are the changes in Sui Testnet Wave 1 compared to Sui Devnet? This article summarizes the four major details of Sui Testnet Wave 1 that are worth paying attention to based on the official announcement.

Regarding SUI’s token economic model, you can learn more about it through the early articles of SUI World DAO:

1. Focus on independent validators

In August this year, SUI Network released an open application for operators and received an enthusiastic response, with more than 28,000 applications. From these, SUI Network officials selected hundreds of third-party validators and full nodes, with a total of 20 validators and 500 nodes. In Sui Testnet Wave 1, SUI Network hopes to build "muscle memory" for decentralized coordination and incident response, and found a group of dedicated validators who are experienced in deploying, monitoring and debugging Sui.

This is the first instance of Sui Network working with a non-Mysten Labs operator, and an important step towards a decentralized Sui mainnet. Although there may be some obstacles in this process, these events are learning experiences and provide valuable reference for the future development of SUI.

2. Operation time

As an incentive testnet, Sui Testnet Wave 1 will run for a very short time, lasting about two to three weeks, and will be shut down once the goal is reached. In the process of entering the mainnet, SUI Network will also continuously launch other testnets.

3. Differences between Devnet and Sui Testnet Wave 1

Sui Network is establishing a new standard for Web3 infrastructure. Unlike other blockchains, Sui uses an object-oriented data model to represent digital assets. Sui Devnet was launched on May 6, 2022. During this process, community members and on-chain developers tested various aspects of Devnet through hundreds of ecological projects. Officials enhanced detection, strengthened monitoring and alerts, resolved bottlenecks in core logic, tested restartability and crash recovery, and analyzed memory and CPU usage of various system components.

The biggest advancement from Devnet to Testnet Wave 1 is the inclusion of independent validators. Under Devnet, Mysten Labs runs four validators to verify transactions on the network. Testnet Wave 1 includes third-party validators and full nodes selected from SUI’s open application process.

Event management will move from Mysten Labs control on Devnet to community-driven on Testnet. This change gives community members greater responsibility to maintain the health of Sui.

Additionally, due to the temporary and validator-centric nature of Testnet Wave 1, Devnet remains the preferred environment for developers to build and test applications. Testnets may be tested, and due to their wide geographical distribution, coordination delays for fixes may be longer, and faucets may also be rate-limited to ensure smooth verification. Developer issues will be resolved more quickly on Devnet, and validator software updates will be more frequent.

Additionally, Move packages that use the recently introduced new integer types (u16, u32, and u256) will not work in this Testnet Wave.

Sui Testnet Wave 1 mainly focuses on independent validators, that is, validators and full nodes selected during the official operator's public application in August can participate in the test. The official said that there is no SUI airdrop plan for the time being. For ordinary users, they can enter the Discord group, receive test tokens through the faucet, actively participate in the interaction of the SUI test network, and experience the efficient SUI network.

As the release of SUI Network mainnet is getting closer, SUI's community will play an increasingly important role in the operation of the network. Please pay attention to the release of Wave 2, which will focus on Epoch management, token economics and staking delegation. The specific time will be determined and announced based on the test results and feedback of Wave 1. SUI World DAO will also keep a long-term focus!
