A new type of Rollup has been announced to join the Layer 2 battle. Binance recently announced an Optimistic Rollup - "opBNB", which is already running on the test network. Did Binance really just fork Optimism and launch its own Layer2? Or are they realizing a larger vision? Cryptocurrency researcher Overcollateralized Jonny discusses this in this article.

opBNB is based on the base version of Optimism OP Stack and is compatible with EVM. This rollup is built on top of the existing BNB Chain, not the Ethereum mainnet (like most of the Optimistic Rollups we’ve seen so far).

Binance claims that opBNB will increase the gas limit “to a staggering 100M,” exceeding Optimism’s 30MGas limit (according to their article). They claim that opBNB will be able to process 4,000 transfers per second with an average transaction cost of less than half a cent. BNB will remain the native currency of the opBNB chain.
The new Rollup will be “natively integrated” with the BNB ecosystem, so we can expect a similar withdrawal experience on the existing BNB Chain directly as Binance CEX.

In their documentation, it seems to imply that they will implement Proto-Danksharding and Danksharding into the existing BNB Chain where possible. They also announced their own dedicated storage tier called BNB Greenfield.
The team seems to want to focus on gaming and NFTs to compete with low-fee and easy-to-enter platforms like Polygon. They mentioned gaming, the metaverse, and social networks multiple times in their documentation and announcements.
Competition in the universal rollup space is fierce right now. As new ZK-Rollups enter the existing Optimistic Rollup space, developers are spread very thinly.

The BNBCHAIN team is banking on the existing large BSC ecosystem migrating to and building on this new opBNB chain to launch the ecosystem. Can their existing community weather the storm? Will this ultimately fragment the user base and liquidity of their existing two chains?
Their documentation states that opBNB will interoperate with other L2 platforms “like Optimism”. Does this mean it will be connected to Optimism’s Superchain? If so, this means there will soon be a lot of interoperability between opBNB, Optimism, and Coinbase’s Base L2.
