The Casablanca Court of Appeal has ruled that 21-year-old Frenchman Thomas Clausi will be sentenced to 18 months in prison for fraud and illegal use of cryptocurrencies and must compensate victims.

It is worth noting that the defendant has been serving his sentence in prison since December 2021. Therefore, his lawyer, Mohamed Aghanaj, stated that the prison time is about to end. Thomas Clausi will only have to serve one more month and a few days in prison from the time of his initial imprisonment.

It is reported that a few years ago, the defendant Thomas Clausi used $440,000 worth of Bitcoin to buy a Ferrari from a French woman in Morocco. Later, the woman reported him to the authorities for fraud. Clausi also bought three luxury watches from another man but gave him a fake check, causing the man to report to the authorities.

In the first case, the defendant used cryptocurrency for payment, which is not legal in Morocco. Therefore, local law considers this method illegal. In the second case, Clausi used a check that could not be processed due to insufficient funds to defraud another victim. (Bitcoinist)
