More than 1,000 technology leaders have written an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on all major AI development and training.

Binance CEO Changpeng 'CZ' Zhao said artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that could potentially take over our world and make us irrelevant, but no one is worried about it.
According to CZ, no one is worried about AI. Instead, people are regulating a neutral technology that increases efficiency and reduces transaction costs — blockchain/cryptocurrency.
CZ was responding to a tweet from Javi Lopez, who predicted that an ineradicable "intelligent virus" would leak out within the next five years. According to Lopez, the virus would exploit any vulnerability to replicate and perpetuate itself.
AI has become increasingly popular recently with the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI. The technology has witnessed rapid adoption and growth, with multiple companies racing to produce more advanced AI products.
CZ added that he supports AI and innovation, but that there needs to be a “balance everywhere.”

CZ is not alone in his views on AI
The Binance CEO isn’t the only one who holds this view on AI.
More than 1,000 tech leaders — including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak — recently wrote an open letter calling for a six-month pause on all major AI development and training.
According to them, such a moratorium will allow developers to better understand how these technologies operate. The letter raises several questions about the ethical implications of AI, asking:
“Should we develop non-human minds that could eventually outstrip us, surpass us, become obsolete, and replace us?”
Meanwhile, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong spoke out against the letter. According to Armstrong, the development of AI should “continue to move forward because the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.”
He added:
“The marketplace of ideas delivers better results than central planning. Never let fear stop progress, and be wary of anyone who seeks to wrest control from central authority.”
