The $6.3 billion hole: withdrawals restored in 10 days

On October 29, a Binance DevOps engineer’s laptop was compromised. The attacker used it to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawals, with the total impact estimated at around $6.3 billion. Binance immediately suspended all withdrawals, worked with on-chain partners to freeze around $3 billion, and pledged to cover all user losses with its SAFU fund and its own funds.
On November 8, withdrawals for $HYPE and APT resumed, exactly 10 days after the incident. The phased reopening went as follows: on November 1, withdrawals of some assets on BTC and 15 other chains resumed; on November 3, this expanded to 51 ETH and Solana tokens; on November 6, Binance announced plans to resume withdrawals for HYPE, APT, INJ, NEAR, LTC, and others; and on November 8, two of them were restored.
Ten days from a complete freeze to the unfreezing of core assets isn’t slow. But “resuming withdrawals” and “restoring trust” are two different timelines.
