Crypto prices barely moved all day, while Binance was shown the door in Europe.
Users in France, Italy, Spain, and Poland received a notice: affected Binance accounts will close on December 31. Starting November 29, a monthly retention fee of 0.025% or 10 USDC (whichever is higher) will be charged, with another charge after December 24. Deposits have already been suspended, but withdrawals remain open.
The reason is that the EU’s MiCA transition period has ended, and Binance still hasn’t obtained a MiCA license. It withdrew its application in Greece in June, its French registration automatically lapsed on July 2, and it doesn’t appear on the European Securities and Markets Authority’s list of licensed firms.
What’s interesting is that the market barely reacted: $BTC is currently at $75,938, down just 0.09% in 24 hours, and trading between $75,571 and $76,034 throughout the day; $ETH is at $2,237, down 0.44%; $BNB is actually up 0.35%, at $697.42. The Fear and Greed Index is at 28, indicating fear.
The next thing to watch: whether users in the four countries can finish withdrawing before the first fee is charged on November 29—and whether Binance can find a new licensed home before year-end. Not investment advice.
