Guys!! The hackers have started aggressively laundering the stolen funds from the Binance hack again!!!
The latest tracking from blockchain analytics firm Elliptic (updated to 4 p.m. Beijing time on November 7): the hackers have converted about $175 million worth of stolen altcoins into roughly 2,300 BTC and moved it to new addresses (Elliptic / PANews, November 7–8). The day before, the figure was still around 1,650 BTC—they converted another 650 or so in just one day, haha.
The biggest chunk was XRP: about 44 million XRP (roughly $51 million) was moved out the previous night, mostly routed through THORChain and swapped directly into BTC. They still have around 148 million XRP (roughly $173 million).
Around the same time, about 53 BTC (roughly $4 million) went through a Wasabi-style coin-mixing service, bringing the cumulative total mixed to about 88 BTC (roughly $6.7 million).
But the biggest chunk hasn’t moved!! Most of the BTC they originally stole directly, along with a lot of the ETH, is still sitting there. Basically, they’re first swapping the altcoins they hold—the ones that are easy to freeze and hard to cash out—for BTC.
Elliptic co-founder Tom Robinson said the operation is “highly sophisticated and clearly automated”: 16 blockchains, more than 20,000 wallets, and at least 65,000 transactions—roughly one new wallet every 30 seconds and one transaction every 10 seconds!!!
Seriously, swapping doesn’t mean they’ve cashed out and gotten away with it, but the more they convert into BTC and send through mixing pools, the harder it’ll be to trace. Don’t trust DMs offering to “help recover your stolen funds”—they’re all scammers, end of story!!!
CoinGecko has BTC at around $75,800, ETH at around $2,235, and BNB at around $695 right now. The market’s still grinding this weekend~
How much of this stolen money do you think can still be recovered?
