Why make room in the factory for a car with no steering wheel when the pickup truck has an annual sales target of 250,000?
On Friday, Musk said the Texas factory would gradually stop producing the Cybertruck by mid-2027. On Saturday, he added that production could continue for another eight to nine months. Texas is its only production site; he didn’t say whether production would move elsewhere.
Sales have already provided the answer: an estimated 20,237 were sold in the U.S. in 2025, down 48% from 38,965 in 2024. The space being freed up will go to the Cybercab, which accounts for about 570 of the more than 1,200 robotaxis in Texas. Its stated installed production capacity is over 125,000 units.
