THE BILL HAS COME DUE FOR THE FED, AND THE MARKET HAS NO DOUBTS ABOUT DECEMBER
The stage is set and the cards are on the table. U.S. inflation is not easing, and the Federal Reserve’s next meeting looks set to be decisive.
The numbers speak for themselves. September’s CPI came in at 3.7%, well above the 3.4% expected. PCE and core PCE remain well above the 2% target. And industry is heating up, with the PPI surging to 6.3%, its highest level since 2022.
The market has already made up its mind. For the December 9 meeting, bets point to an 85% probability of a 25-basis-point hike. Giants like PIMCO, Citi, and UBS are on the same page. And the overwhelming majority of economists agree.
A strong labor market and rising energy prices are the perfect fuel for monetary tightening. If you were hoping for a reprieve, you’d better rethink your strategy.
