: 70.49 million stolen tokens proposed for recovery through a hard fork—Polygon is undergoing a governance stress test!
A special proposal recently emerged in the Polygon community: a coordinated hard fork would transfer approximately 70.49 million native POL tokens stranded in attackers’ addresses following two security incidents back to recovery addresses designated by Polymarket and Binance.
Specifically:
Polymarket-related: approximately 23.86 million POL
Binance-related: approximately 46.63 million POL
At the reference price in the proposal, the total is approximately $6.5 million.
Note: This is neither a burn nor a buyback. The proposal explicitly states that the total supply will remain unchanged before and after the transfer.
The real question is whether a blockchain can use governance and consensus upgrades to recover stolen assets in exceptional security incidents. At the same time, Polygon has also proposed a draft of PIP-93, which plans to consolidate several security committees into an 11-member Security Council, with an 8-of-11 multisig threshold and a 7-day timelock.
However, both items still require further governance and technical implementation, so they should not be treated as completed positive developments.
